Our Advocacy & Activism
The Mission
Our mission is to champion the separation of church and state, ensuring that everyone, regardless of belief or non-belief, has the freedom to live their lives according to their own values, without religion being imposed upon them.
We fight for a just and equitable society by engaging the local community and advocating for public policies informed by reason, science, and human dignity– not religious dogma.
What Causes Do We Champion?
Secular Women of the Triangle is committed to empowering women to take a stand against the overreach of religious influence in public life, which frequently undermines the values of our members. We fight for LGBTQ+ equality, racial and gender justice, and the right to bodily autonomy. We advocate for the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, animals, and the environment as we work toward making today’s world a better place.
The Advocacy Committee
To ensure our advocacy efforts reflect what matters most to our members, SWT conducted a community survey to identify the issues they are most passionate about. From that feedback, three priority areas emerged:
- The separation of church and state: We advocate for policies that keep the government and religious institutions distinct, independent, and neutral, and those that prohibit the government from establishing a state religion, favoring one religion over another, or interfering with the free exercise of faith.
- Education: We advocate for evidence and science-based curriculum in local schools.
- Access to healthcare: We advocate for equitable and just healthcare access for all.
In response, the SWT Advocacy Committee was formed, holding its first meeting on September 20, 2025. The committee meets regularly through Meetup to stay informed, track relevant local and state issues, and turn shared values into meaningful action. Through research, discussion, and community engagement, the Advocacy Committee helps SWT members stay connected to the issues shaping our communities—and provides opportunities to participate at whatever level feels right for them.
SWT Advocacy Events
Protests/ Marches: By standing together and speaking out, SWT helps bring visibility to causes that matter. Our members have taken part in events such as the Women’s March, No Kings Protest, Workers Over Billionaires Protest, and the Good Trouble Lives On Vigil.
Training Sessions: SWT offers training sessions designed to empower members with the skills and knowledge needed to engage meaningfully in civic life and community advocacy. These sessions have covered topics such as civics fundamentals, identifying and communicating with government representatives, and secular advocacy, often featuring guest speakers including state representatives.
Volunteer: SWT engages in hands-on volunteer work that supports local communities and reflects our shared values. Our members have participated in food and item drives for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and the Raleigh Women’s Center, environmental cleanup efforts around Lake Crabtree, clothing sorting with Note in the Pocket, and food packing events with Rise Against Hunger.
Postcards/ Zines: SWT brings members together to create and share advocacy-driven literature, including group postcard-writing efforts to encourage voter participation in key elections. We’ve also hosted zine-folding and distribution events featuring educational, creative, and political content, with plans to develop original SWT zines
Advocacy Day: Advocacy Day is an annual event where SWT partners with other secular organizations to visit the North Carolina General Assembly and meet directly with senators and representatives. Members share their perspectives as individuals and as part of a secular community, discuss legislation they support or oppose, and build connections to strengthen secular representation in a deeply religious state.
